What is coaching, How does it work?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership.
In my own words, the Coach and Client work together to identify gaps or challenges that would be valuable for the Client to overcome in order to improve their quality of life. The Coach's primary roll is to get the Client moving forward by helping them uncover their blind spots in relation to the identified gaps/challenges. Then the Coach guides the Client to use that new awareness, reshaping their behavior in a way that promotes a more favorable coarse of action on the way to overcoming their gaps/challenges.
Clients are typically more successful and have more permanent results with coaching over training or consulting because they rely on their own knowledge and experience to create the best path forward for them with the new insight they gain through the coaching process.
What if the difference between coaching, consulting, mentoring, training, counseling?
There is a bit of nuance with this question as not everyone has the same definition or understanding of each of these. For example, some life, business, or fitness coaches might cross more into the advisor, trainer, consultant space than pure coaching as it relates to the ICF definition of coaching.
I'll try to articulate some of the high level differences in my own words.
Coaching - Coaching is future focused, ideally resulting in long term/permanent change. The Coach and Client work together to identify and overcome gaps or challenges that are valuable for the Client resulting in an improved quality of life.
Consulting/Advising - A Consultant/Advisor is an expert in a particular field. Their primary purpose is provide professional advice.
Mentoring - A Mentor is typically a long term volunteer that has more experience in a roll or situation that the Mentee is currently in and the Mentee would like help to advance. The Mentor usually provides guidance on specific situations and focuses on teaching.
Training - A Trainer is a person that is enlisted to teach a Trainee specific skills. Sometimes they also provide encouragement and/or accountability to develop those skills.
Counseling/Therapy - A Counselor or Therapist is clinically training to help people heal. This frequently involves working on something from the past.
How much does coaching cost?
The short answer is there is a broad range depending on the solution that works best for you.
